The old way to sign a digital document was absurd: print it, sign the paper with a pen, scan it back into a PDF, and email the scan. It needs a printer, a pen, a scanner, and five minutes. Signing in the browser replaces all four.

Why an electronic signature is enough

For the vast majority of everyday documents — rental agreements, invoices, permission slips, internal approvals — a clear image of your handwritten signature placed on the page is accepted, because the point is to show intent, not cryptographic proof. A drawn signature looks exactly like the scanned version of your handwriting, because that is what it is. A cryptographic digital signature (the kind with certificates) is a different, heavier mechanism, and is only expected in regulated workflows such as government filings or banking systems.

The four-step workflow

Every browser-based signing tool works the same way, and it takes about a minute:

1. Open the PDF. It is read locally and rendered on screen — nothing is uploaded anywhere.
2. Create your signature once. Draw it with a mouse, trackpad, finger on a touchscreen, or a stylus. One smooth stroke reads better than a careful one. Save it with a name like "John Doe".
3. Place and adjust. Drag the signature onto the signature line, then use the corner handle to resize it. Add separate fields for the printed name, ID number, or date — each one is its own movable box.
4. Export. The tool rebuilds the PDF with your marks baked into the pages at exactly the positions you chose, and you download the finished file.

Getting the size right

A signature that is too large looks stamped on; too small looks like a footnote. As a rule, your signature should be roughly the width of the printed name field it sits next to — about 2 to 4 cm on a letter or A4 page. The preview shows the real page, so compare against the printed line rather than the screen. If the page is dense, place the date to the left of the signature, not below it, to avoid collisions.

Reusing your signature safely

Good tools offer to remember your signature so you do not redraw it next time. There is an important difference in where it is remembered:

• Saved in your browser (localStorage). The signature image stays on your own device. It works offline, no account is needed, and nobody — including the tool's operator — can see it. This is the right model for personal signatures.
• Saved on a server. The image is uploaded to the company's machines. Convenient across devices, but it means your handwriting exists in someone else's database.

If a tool stores signatures in your browser, it will say so — look for wording like "stored locally", "never uploaded", or "stays on your device". If a tool is vague about storage, assume the server and do not save anything sensitive.

When a drawn signature is not enough

• Notarised documents usually require a wet signature or a specific notary process.
• Tax and government portals often require their own signing flow, sometimes with a certificate.
• Counterparties may ask for a specific format — some contracts explicitly forbid electronic signatures. Read the clause before assuming.

For everything else, drawing your signature in the browser is faster than finding a printer, and the result is indistinguishable from the print-sign-scan version.
